When referencing another work, include the author and page number, if applicable, in your in-text citation. If the author’s names is in the sentence, it does not need to go in parenthesis. Visit Purdue University OWL’s In-Text Citation page for more examples and in-depth help.
Examples:
Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263).
Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263).
Example, no known author: Use a shortened title of the work in quotations if it’s a short work (such as an article) or italicized if it’s a longer work (such as a book or entire website).

When referencing another work but not directly quoting the work, include only the author and year in your in-text citation. When directly quoting, include the author, year, and page number, using “p.” for one page and “pp.” for multiple pages. If the author’s names is in the sentence, it does not need to go in parenthesis. With a direct quote and the author’s name in the sentence, the date goes after the author’s name and the page number at the end of the quote.
