Central Arizona College to Host Cultural Expression Contests and Events

Central Arizona College’s Communication Studies, Equity Council and Student Engagement will hold a poetry contest and Pecha Kucha cultural expression speaking competition to celebrate Black History Month. The theme for this year’s contest is “Be the Change.”
The Cultural Expression Competition is a poetry and public speaking event in which CAC students can express their experiences, stories, and knowledge related to the theme utilizing poetry and the Pecha Kucha speaking presentation style.
This year CAC commemorates 24 years of The Black History Poetry contest as a long-standing tradition. Students, Faculty, Staff and Community members are invited to submit their poems related to the theme. Poetry contest submissions should be emailed to
eliana.leamons@centralaz.edu. For the Pecha Kucha speaking competition, video presentations must be submitted to Professor Michelle Young at michelle.young1@centralaz.edu. The deadline for all submissions is Wednesday, February 19 by 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top finalists.
In honor of Black History month CAC will host a Spoken Word Artist & Live Music Performance with ShySpeaks on February 11 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Also, the Cultural Expression Celebration will include African Drum & Dance Theater, Poetry Contest, & Pecha Kucha Competition, and a culturally inspired lunch for attendees. Winners of the poetry contest and Pecha Kucha Cultural Expression speaking competition will be announced during the event on Tuesday, February 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
