Central Arizona College Launches Accelerated UAS Maintenance Technician Program to Support Safe Growth of Arizona’s Expanding Drone Workforce
Submitted By: EmmaLea Bittner, Community & Continuing Education Coordinator
Central Arizona College (CAC) has announced the launch of its new UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) Maintenance Technician program, an accelerated workforce development pathway that prepares for in-demand drone technician roles in a matter of weeks. As Arizona’s drone use grows across advanced manufacturing, mining, logistics, public safety and agriculture disciplines, employers are seeking trained professionals who can keep equipment safe, reliable and ready for everyday operations.
National forecasts from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) show steady expansion of the commercial drone fleet, with more businesses relying on drones for inspections, mapping, delivery and field monitoring. As technology evolves, pilots are expected to oversee multiple aircraft at once, increasing the need for skilled technicians who can perform routine inspections, troubleshoot issues and ensure each aircraft remains safe and compliant.
“Arizona’s employers are scaling UAS operations for inspections, surveying, crop health and delivery – and they need trained, skilled maintainers to ensure airworthiness on every flight,” said EmmaLea Bittner, Community & Continuing Education Coordinator at Central Arizona College. “This fast paced, non-credit certification program addresses the maintenance gap with practical, job-ready training aligned to FAA guidance, industry standards, and real-world employer expectations.”
The program provides students with a strong foundation in drone components, flight dynamics, electrical systems and communication links. Learners gain hands-on experience identifying issues, performing preventative maintenance and documenting repairs – skills that directly support safe operations in the field. Training is aligned with recognized industry standards, including ASTM International F3600 practices and manufacturer maintenance procedures.
Students also develop the inspection and troubleshooting skills required to maintain small and medium-sized drone fleets, which are becoming increasingly common as industries adopt drone technology at scale. With the FAA continuing to advance frameworks for more complex drone operations, employers are prioritizing technicians who understand both safety requirements and daily operational needs.
Key features of the program include an accelerated 12-week format, preparation for industry-recognized certifications to earn the UAS Maintenance Technician Designation (Safety Level 1 and 2 Certifications) from Unmanned Safety Institute (USI) – and job placement assistance to support graduates entering the workforce.
Enrollment is now open for upcoming cohorts, with the first session beginning February 23, 2026. To enroll, visit: https://www.flyusi.org/drone-program-central-arizona-college
