ESOL/ELAA Classes

Central Arizona College offers FREE ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes throughout Pinal County. The classes are funded in part through the Department of Education’s Adult Education Grant (Title II of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act), and are designed to help English language learners improve upon the four basic communication skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – with the purpose of:

  1. assisting adults to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and economic self-sufficiency;
  2. assisting adults who are parents to obtain the education and skills needed to participate successfully in the educational development of their children and improve the economic opportunities of the family;
  3. assisting immigrants and other individuals who are English language learners in acquiring an understanding of the American system of government, individual freedom, and the responsibilities of citizenship.

What do they look like?

Classes are face to face and online. Online classes are live (synchronous) – where students and the teacher all join a virtual classroom at the same time. Online classes are only recommended for continuing students or students with intermediate and advanced technology skills and who live in Pinal County to ensure student success. Additionally, students will have to complete a placement test on campus prior to the start of class.

Las clases son virtuales usando Blackboard Collaborate.

Classes are divided into two levels

Beginner to Low-Intermediate:  Students are beginners, but may be able to respond with limited spoken English, can understand some key words, and can recognize some common written words.

High-Intermediate to Advanced: Students currently are already able to understand learned phrases and short new sentences, can read text on familiar subjects and write simple paragraphs, as well as follow simple oral and written instructions. (These students would be eligible for the online class option)
