Students have identified many benefits to their participation in the Honors Program. Although the focus on this page is mostly academic and intellectual, students often cite social growth and expanding horizons as important benefits. Maybe the best way to find out the most important benefits is to interview a number of students and judge for yourself. Here are a few that students, parents, and community members have cited.
Smaller, more intimate Honors classes with enhanced learning opportunities. With an average of fifteen students in Honors Colloquium classes and even fewer students in Honors Seminars, students are given more individualized attention and mentoring. Professors and mentors often take time out of their own schedules to help students with a concern they may have.
Extended and enriched intellectual opportunities in the Honors curriculum. Field trips and visits from guest speakers enrich the student’s learning experience in the enriched and challenging Honors Colloquium classes. The Colloquia also provide students the opportunity to engage in profound discussions with fellow students and the professor.
The extended curriculum methodology gives Honors Program students the opportunity to select a course that is part of the regular curriculum and then work with the professor to mold it into an Honors courses by extending the learning experience. This way, Honors Program students can study subjects of their choice in greater depth than the usual classroom situation provides.
In the Honors Seminars, Honors Program students share current research and inquiry strategies. Honors Program students get to work with Honors Seminar professors to support the learning opportunities in the extended curriculum.
Extracurricular social, cultural and intellectual opportunities. Social gatherings and other Honors Program activities provide additional opportunity for social interaction and intellectual growth. Within and outside of class, Honors Program students experience lectures and other activities of cultural and scholarly significance; exhibits; productions; concerts; and local, state and regional academic conferences.
Recognition Honors Program students receive for exceptional academic achievement. ◦Being an Honors Program student is a great privilege, and fellow Honors students as well as professors, respect the Honors Program students for the extra work they accomplish.
At campus and state ceremonies, Honors Program students are recognized for their achievement.
At the Honors Convocation, students who have successfully completed the Colloquium and/or the Honors Program receive special recognition for their achievement.
At graduation students who have successfully completed the 18-credit Honors Program requirements are given special recognition for their achievement. They have the privilege and honor of wearing the Honors Program Medallion at the graduation ceremony.
Transfer assistance and facilitation of entry in university Honors programs. According to the Deans of the Honors Programs at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona, any student who completes the Central Arizona College Honors Program will automatically be admitted to their university Honors program.
Transferable courses. The Colloquia (HNR 204 and HNR 205) satisfy General Education requirements for graduating from CAC and are transferable to the university as Humanity courses. They also satisfy the Intensive Writing/Critical Thinking graduation requirement.
