CAC Student Receives Hurst Review NCLEX® Scholarship

By Angela Askey, Executive Director Public Relations and Marketing

Central Arizona College student, Teresa Smith, was recently awarded a Hurst Review NCLEX® Scholarship to help cover the cost of her NCLEX® exam fees and study materials. She was one of 12 Phi Theta Kappa students selected from a national pool of candidates.

The scholarship, funded by national nursing exam prep company Hurst Review Services, is exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa nursing majors who plan to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX®). Hurst Scholars will receive a code to cover the cost of Hurst Review NCLEX® study materials and a cash award to cover the NCLEX® exam fees.

The NCLEX® is a standardized exam given by each state’s board of nursing to determine if RN or LPN/LVN candidates are competent for entry-level nursing practice. In addition to the scholarship, Hurst also provides a $50 discount on NCLEX® study materials — including the new N-STREAM — for all Phi Theta Kappa members preparing to take the exam.

Smith attended secondary education in New York and chose to pursue a nursing degree at Central Arizona College. She received her Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) certificate in May 2023 and will receive her Associate of Applied Science in Nursing and Registered Nursing degree in Spring 2024. Smith is a member of the Honors program and Phi Theta Kappa, serving as Vice President of College Projects.

Following graduation, Smith plans to open a Group Home for the developmentally disabled population of east valley communities.

When asked about the significance of this scholarship Smith stated, “I am truly grateful for this opportunity, especially the free use of the Hurst Review study materials.” She added, “This scholarship is essential to me so that I can pay for my NCLEX exam. It was highly recommended that nursing students not work full-time while registered in the full-time nursing program, due to the extensive amount of work and mandatory hospital clinicals. I took a leap of faith and resigned from my job so that I may go to school full-time in pursuit of earning my RN degree. Without scholarships I would not be able to afford to go back to school.”
