Fire Science Technology Degrees and Certificates

 

COLLEGE FIREFIGHTER ACADEMY (13 Credits)
Spring and Fall Semester

The Fire Academy prepares our students for an entry level position as a career Firefighter. It will generally run during a semester and operates one night a week at 17:00 hrs to 21:00 hrs and one day a week from 07:00hrs to 16:00hrs. Students will attend classroom sessions and participate in structured hands on skills training to test their ability to perform critical fireground tasks that include but is not limited to hose lays, search and rescue, ladders, vehicle extrication, SCBA donning and doffing, power tools, ventilation operations, high rise operations, rapid intervention team, and live burn operations. Lastly, the student will also participate in daily cardiovascular and strength training with a strong emphasis on confidence building, personal commitment and team cohesion.

This course of instruction is delivered to the National Fire Protection Association NFPA 1001, and Professional Firefighter Standards. It will also prepare the student for International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) written and practical skills testing that is conducted on campus through the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence.

FIREFIGHTER OPERATIONS CERTIFICATE (19 Credits)

The Firefighter Operations Certificate of Completion is designed to prepare future firefighters for a career in the fire service. The program curriculum and course of instruction will provide the student with the knowledge and skills to effectively perform the essential functions of an entry level firefighter.

Upon successful completion of the fire academy (FSC 140), students sit for the State proctored written and practical skills examinations; successful students will be awarded State of Arizona certification through the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence Fire Service Accreditation.

WILDLAND CERTIFICATE (13 Credits)

Advanced training in Wildfire Firefighting per the requirements established by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG). This certificate is designed for the professional firefighter currently employed with an agency that responds to wildland fire incidents. Completion of this certificate course of instruction will provide the student the (NWCG) educational requirements that lead up to the level of Single Resource Boss.
