PBL State Leadership Conference
On March 30th and 31st, 2012, the Central Arizona College Business Club or Beta Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda attended and participated in the 42nd Annual PBL State Leadership Conference held at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. A total of ninety participants were brought together from Arizona State University, Embry-Riddle, Eastern Arizona College, Northern Arizona University Extended Campus, Virtual Members and Central Arizona College.
Club Members were in attendance on Friday, March 30th to register and participate in exams prior to the conference's official opening on Saturday. Afterward, an optional social event was hosted by AZ PBL at Plaza Bonita Restaurant. Saturday morning's Opening Session started with chapter reports given by each respective chapter Presidents to provide all PBL Members with an update of their club activities during the 2011-2012 school year. Members were introduced to candidates running for 2012-2013 State Executive Offices. Our own member Brendin Bair qualified for an Executive Vice President candidate and presented his platform campaign speech that included a new potential idea for a Nike Shoes recycle statewide project and closed with an anonymous quote: "Anything worth doing is worth working hard for." Brendin's flashing 'bear paw' light pins signifying a 'Vote for the Bair,' reminder were a great campaign strategy hit with all state members!
Following the opening session, members separated to compete in various competition events and exams. Some of the performance events included public speaking, business ethics, emerging business issues, business presentation, small business management plan and various Chapters Competitions judged by industry or educational expert volunteers. The CAC Business Club Academic Team attending included: Brendin Bair (CGUHS), Marquise Oaks (Coolidge HS), Andreas Pasqual (Baboquivari HS- Sells, AZ), Christian Collett (Maricopa HS), Gerardo Lona (Coolidge), Alysha Kulp (CGHUS), Shirley Guiterrez (CGUHS), Daniel De La Huerta (Shadow Ridge HS- Las Vegas, NV), Kenneth Martinez (NY), Deontae Williamson (Bassett HS- Bassett, VA) and Miguel Ramirez (CGUHS).
After the competitions events concluded, a question and answer session took place with the officer candidates where members participated in open questioning of the candidates. It was followed by the final voting session. Central Arizona College Chapter had three voting delegates based on its current chapter membership enrollment of thirty-one members, with Emery Riddle having the largest chapter at 33 members. Students also attend various networking activities or professional workshops including one on Forensic Accounting on Fraud Examination presented by an Emery Riddle Certified Public Fraud or CPF accounting professor. Closing activities followed with the 42nd Annual Awards Banquets announcing the five newly elected 2012-2012 State Officers including three students from Arizona State, one from Central Arizona, and one from the virtual chapter. Individual competition and chapter winners were awarded trophy for first place winners and medals for 2nd & 3rd.

Members who placed at the Arizona PBL SLC and the Collegiate DECA SLC held in February were the determining factor in the Business Club members advancement to attend the National Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference to be held in San Antonio, Texas on June 24 - 27, 2012. The Club will conclude the academic year by electing next years' executive officers, awarding activity scholarships due April 4th and preparation for attending Nationals. The Business Club is open to all college majors who which to pursue college and industry networking, career and professional development, service learning with state and national competition in business related events.
