New Communication Studies Program Being Offered This Fall
By Angela Askey, Director of Marketing
Communication skills are one of the most highly desired skills sought by employers today. Employees in the digital age must know how to effectively convey and receive messages in person as well as via phone, email and social media.
Beginning this fall, Central Arizona College will offer a newly developed Communication Studies program. Coursework will focus on basic communication principles, public speaking and group dynamics.
Communication Studies is designed to help students enhance their oral communication skills. They will explore how to use electronic and social media effectively, improve speaking and listening skills, apply communication theory, and how to appropriately communicate in various settings.
Additional course options include Fundamentals of Human Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication, Public Speaking, Professional Communication and Intercultural Communication.
Two new certificates will also be offered this fall. Communication Studies will prepare students with strong communication skills applicable to a wide variety of employment situations. With this certificate, students may pursue continued education in communication studies at the university level. The Communication Skills for the Professional certificate emphasizes the importance of using communication technologies in the workplace.
“Improving your communication skills is an investment that will last a lifetime,” stated Michelle Young, Professor of Speech Communications. “The ability to communicate effectively is essential, no matter what industry you work in.”
