“Let’s Get Funky” by Central Arizona College Jazz Ensemble Scheduled for April 28


The Central Arizona College Jazz Ensemble will present "Let's Get Funky" on Thurs., April 28 at 7 p.m. The concert will be held at the Pence Center for the Visual and Performing Arts on the Signal Peak Campus of Central Arizona College (8470 N. Overfield Road, Coolidge, AZ). There is no admission charge.

A culmination to their semester of jazz studies, musicians in the 15 piece jazz ensemble will perform both classic big band music and contemporary jazz literature. Featured classic charts will include: Stan Kenton’s, “Intermission Riff;” “I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart” by Duke Ellington; Guaraldi’s “Linus and Lucy;” as well as, “Send In The Clowns” by Stephen Sondheim.

The evening will feature many of the talented musicians including; Larry Marik (tenor sax – Casa Grande), Mario Escalante (tenor sax – Casa Grande Union High School), Mason White (trombone – Apache Junction High School), Walter Jacobson (trumpet – Casa Grande), John Sutton (bass – Eloy), and Hugo Sergovia (drum set – Casa Grande Union High School).

The featured guest soloist for the evening will be local legend, Brad Kepler. Mr. Kepler works at Casa Grande Union High School and is a favorite vocalist in this area. He will be singing the classics: “All Of Me” and “All The Things You Are.”

The band will also award the Jim Lee Jazz Award to band members who have played four semesters in the band. This includes Jonathan Salazar (alto saxophone - Santa Cruz Valley Union High School), Logan Blevins (tenor saxophone – Maricopa High School), Miguel Espinoza (trumpet - Santa Cruz Valley Union High School), and Wendolynn Landers (piano – Arizona City).

The CAC Jazz Ensemble rehearses twice a week. Their repertoire consists of standard and progressive jazz literature in the swing, Latin, and rock idioms. An emphasis is placed on learning and developing improvisational skills. The CAC Jazz Ensemble performs one concert on campus per semester and numerous gigs throughout the Casa Grande area. The ensemble is directed by Professor Rick Moore.
