Twenty students attending the Casa Grande School District Health Career Camp recently participated in a three hour event at Central Arizona College’s Signal Peak Campus which showcased various health career program options.
During their time at CAC, students gained a greater appreciation and understanding of various health professions by participating in interactive activities. They learned about Massage Therapy and the variety of opportunities for places of employment; steps to become a Clinical Lab Assistant; and the emerging roles of Community Health Workers in Public Health. Students were fascinated by the EMT/Paramedic and Fire Science careers. Other programs highlighted were Medical Assisting, Certified Nursing Assistant, Health Information Management, Nursing, Radiologic Technology, Dietetic Education and Pharmacy Technician.
“It was great to see the students engaged and asking questions like: What do you do in a typical day? What is the best thing about your job? When were you the most afraid?,” stated Kim Bentley, M.Ed, NDTR, CHES, Instructional Specialist and event coordinator.
Additionally, students learned about other opportunities CAC provides, including Promise for the Future. During the eighth grade students can sign the Promise for the Future pledge. By maintaining a 2.75 GPA, completing a set number of community service hours, and graduating from a Pinal County high school they become eligible for free tuition at any of the college’s campuses for up to four consecutive semesters.
Throughout the three day camp, students visited Sun Life Family Health Center, Inc., Banner Casa Grande Medical Center and CAVIT.
Workforce development needs in health occupations is taking the lead. According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the healthcare industry is projected to add over 4 million jobs between 2012 and 2022.
Bentley explained, “This is without question - a golden opportunity for employment options for both our current and future students.”
