CAC Early Childhood Education Recognized for White House Initiative on Educational Excellence
By Angela Askey, Executive Director Public Relations & Marketing
Central Arizona College’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program has been recognized for their commitment to action from the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
A year ago, the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics launched a Year of Action, and with it a national call for Commitments to Action in honor of its 25th anniversary. A collective investment of nearly $340 million to accelerate federal, state and local investment in high –quality education for Latino communities, along with the selected Commitments to Action were announced by President Obama in late October.
The ECE program joins nearly 150 public and private sector organizations who answered the call to action with their commitment to the CAC Early Learning Teacher Recruitment Project. By developing new strategies to recruit and retain Latina/o students into CAC’s education programs and by providing educational pathways for Spanish or bilingual speakers, the program will increase the number of students completing degrees, certificates or credentials in the field of Early Childhood Education.
CAC’s Commitment includes developing a cohort of Spanish speaking students in high need areas. A bilingual instructor will be hired to deliver face to face courses in Spanish. An online course to assist Child Development Associate (CDA) candidates with the completion of their required portfolio has been created and will also be facilitated in Spanish. CDA candidates will also have access to mentoring services in both English and Spanish to assist them in completing the CDA application requirements.
By working with partners throughout the state, including the Professional Career Pathway Project scholarship grant, the Commitment aims to recruit an additional 15 Latina/o students into the early learning field each year.
“We look forward to this opportunity to enhance the recruitment and retention of a well-trained early childhood workforce to meet the diverse needs of the children in the communities we serve” stated Melissa Busby, Early Childhood Education Director.
