CAC choral program seeks talent

PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – In preparation for another exciting semester, the Central Arizona College choral program is accepting new members to learn and perform at its Signal Peak Campus.
Current CAC students as well as members of the community who enjoy singing are invited to choose from three different choirs this fall to enhance their vocal chords and share their talents.
Two separate sections of CAC’s College Choir course currently are being offered for the fall semester. The CAC College Choir performs a variety of music, including classical, popular, folk, contemporary and multicultural sections.
“Being a member of a choral group is a great way for a person who enjoys singing to have an opportunity to both use and improve their skills,” Dr. Kim Osteen-Petreshock, director of the choral program at CAC, explained. “It's also a great way to meet other people who enjoy making music.”
The first section will meet 1:30-2:45 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The second section, which also is referred to as Community Choir, meets every Monday from 7-9:30 p.m.
Neither of these two groups requires an audition to participate, and while not mandatory, prior experience and music-reading ability is helpful. Also, these classes have an extended registration period, so students unable to register for the College Choir will be permitted to attend the first class of the semester.
The third offering, the CAC Jazz Choir, is a smaller group that focuses primarily on jazz music and some popular music. The group will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 12-1:15 p.m. A brief audition is required for acceptance into Jazz Choir; arrangements can be made by contacting Osteen-Petreshock.
“It is not necessary to prepare any music for the Jazz Choir audition. The best thing to do would be to start singing regularly and to perform any warm-up exercises you might know so that your voice is warmed up and ready to go.”
All three choral groups meet in Room 104 of the Pence Center at the Signal Peak Campus and begin rehearsing Monday, Aug. 19.
“All choirs participate in two major concerts per semester - one around the middle of the semester and one at the end,” Osteen-Petreshock said. “The performances are usually on campus. All relevant dates and times will be made available at the beginning of the semester.”
To register for one of these three vocal performance opportunities, contact an academic advisor. For more information about the CAC choral programs, or to arrange an audition for the Jazz Choir, please contact Osteen-Petreshock by phone at 520-560-5779, or by email at email@example.com.
