Arizona author & poet Alberto Rios to deliver The Poetry of Science presentation, April 12 at CAC

PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – Central Arizona College invites the public to a special presentation by distinguished author, poet and educator Alberto Rios entitled The Poetry of Science on Friday, April 12, at its Signal Peak Campus. 

The presentation is being coordinated by CAC’s Communication Division and is scheduled from 6:30-7:15 p.m. as a featured part of CAC’s Astronomy Night @ The Peak: The Big Bang! The event is free and open to the public. 

CAC’s Signal Peak Campus is located between the cities of Casa Grande and Coolidge, just minutes east of Interstate 10 off of the McCartney Road exit. The presentation will take place in Room T116 of the Gloria R. Sheldon University Center (Building T). 

A lifelong Arizonan born to a Mexican father and an English mother in Nogales, Rios is the author of 10 books and chapbooks of poetry, three collections of short stories, and a memoir. 

He is the recipient of many accolades, including the Western Literature Association Distinguished Achievement Award, the Arizona Governor’s Arts Award, fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Walt Whitman Award, the Western States Book Award for Fiction, six Puschart Prizes in both poetry and fiction, and inclusion in The Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry. 

Rios’s memoir about growing up on the Mexico-Arizona border, titled Capirotada, won the Latino Literary Hall of Fame Award and was designated as the One Book Arizona choice for 2009. For the past several years, he also has been the host of the popular KAET television program, Books & Co., an Arizona PBS production. 

“Alberto Rios is a poet of reverie and magical perception,” wrote the judges of the 2002 National Book Awards, “and of the threshold between this world and the world beyond.” 

For more than 30 years, Rios has taught at Arizona State University where he holds the dual distinction of being a Regents’ Professor and Katharine C. Turner Endowed Chair in English.
