Florence Unified School District middle school math teams amass medals; AJ’s Desert Shadows places 2nd

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. – More than 100 students from middle schools located in northern Pinal County competed for medallions, certificates and the rite to be called top arithmetic students during the 2009 Central Arizona College Middle School Math Contest.
Copper Basin Elementary finished first while Walker Butte Elementary took third giving the Florence Unified School District two of the three highest awards. The Anthem Elementary duo of Tanner Cline and Jason Galvez claimed the top team medal.
Finishing in second place in the team competition was Desert Shadows Elementary School of the Apache Junction Unified School District.
The event was held on Friday, Jan. 30, at Central Arizona College’s Superstition Mountain Campus in Apache Junction.
Strong community support featured prize and food donations from the following organizations:

- Central Arizona College Massage Therapy Program
- Central Arizona College Support Staff
- Gold Canyon Bank
- Optimist Club of Apache Junction
- Paradise Bakery
- Right Away Disposal
The gold-medal winning Copper Basin team featured the following students: Taylor Clark, Kassandra Ramirez, Zac Rosten, Matthew Kuebler, Jessica Traichal, Rebecca Palmer, Brian Rathburn, Jordan Uballe and Caitlyn Whittington.
The silver medal went to a Desert Shadows squad featuring Molly Wyman, Aaron Blank, William Rosales, Micah Raney, George Garcia-Osorio, Tamerlan Kadyrov, Finn Dillon, Tyler Ralston, Taylor Ayers and Amber Rink.
Walker Butte’s bronze medal students included Marjorie Aquino, Ming Ngu, Kaleb Daniel, Brenna Swanson, Hans Brown, Richard Garcia, Sarah Brown, Breanna Bartlett, Wilson Neloy and Kimberly Wegener.
The Middle School Math Contest at the Superstition Mountain Campus not only provided an opportunity for competition, but it exposed students to a college atmosphere.
