Central Arizona College Community Wind Ensemble blows through The Pence April 19

April 13, 2009

PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – Rick Moore and the Central Arizona College Community Wind Ensemble will perform their annual spring concert on Sunday afternoon, April 19, at 3 p.m.

The event will be held in the Don P. Pence Center for Visual and Performing Arts located on the Signal Peak Campus between the cities of Coolidge and Casa Grande.

Tickets for the show are $5. Central Arizona College students with a CAC ID card will be admitted at no charge.

Advance tickets may be purchased by calling the CAC Cashier’s Office at 520-494-5225 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Advance tickets also may be purchased in person at the Cashier’s Office in Building M (Clock Tower) on the Signal Peak Campus during the same hours.

Tickets will be available the day of the show, but guests are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. CAC’s last matinee event, Nunsense, on Sunday, March 8, was a complete sellout.
The event is being sponsored by the CAC Community Events Office and the college’s Creative Arts Division.

The program will feature Concertino by Carl Maria von Weber with a virtuosic clarinet solo performed by Arizona City resident Ted Willhite.

Other musical compositions featured during the concert include:

• The Promise of Living (Copland/Singleton) - Some of Aaron Copland’s most beautiful writing from his only opera The Tenderland.

• American Civil War Fantasy (Bilik) - A musical Civil War journey taken through several popular early American tunes such as Camptown Races, Yellow Rose of Texas and Battle Hymn of the Republic.

• Washington Grays (Grafulla) - One of America’s great marches from the mid 1800s.

• Slippery Hank (Losey) - A rag that will feature the trombone section.

• The Music-Makers (Reed) - A magnificent concert opener that celebrates the joy of making music.

• Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral (Wagner/Caillet) - A dramatic piece from Wagner’s opera Lohengrin which has made it a staple of the wind ensemble library.

The Central Arizona College Wind Ensemble consists of approximately 50 members from six Pinal County communities. The age range of the ensemble is 14-85 and features nearly 40 members from Casa Grande alone.

“The professions of our ensemble members include a broad spectrum of careers and vocations,” Moore, who directs the ensemble, said. “The ensemble performs a wide range of standard concert band literature as well as lighter works.”

The ensemble rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7-8:50 p.m. and performs one concert on campus per semester.

“Membership in the ensemble is open to all who enjoy and wish to continue playing their instrument,” Moore said.

Now in his seventh year as the director of instrumental music, Moore serves as the director of the band and is a professor of music.

His duties include conducting the Community Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble, providing all brass and percussion private lessons, and teaching classes in music appreciation and jazz/popular music appreciation.

In addition to his college duties, Moore serves as the musical director for the Big Band Memories of Tucson and performs on the trumpet and saxophone with his own groups. He performs with the Sonoran Jazz Ensemble, Rick Moore and His Horns, and the Phoenix-based Seniors Unlimited.

Moore is in demand as a clinician and guest conductor in Pinal County, the Greater Phoenix Area, and in many regions in Arizona.
