April 6, 2009

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – For the fourth time in Central Arizona College history, the women’s basketball team has captured the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Championship.

The 78-71 victory over Jefferson (Mo.) College on March 21 in the title game capped a perfect 35-0 season and gave rookie head coach Denise Cardenas a national championship in her first season as the leader of the Vaqueras.

On Saturday night, April 11, fans unable to attend the game in Kansas will have an opportunity to watch the replay on KCAB TV-28 in Casa Grande.

The replay of the game starts at 7 p.m. and will feature interviews with Cardenas and her players interspersed throughout the evening.

Prior to this year, the women’s basketball team claimed national championships in 1989, 1998 and 2005. Central Arizona College has been in the title game in each of the last three seasons, finishing as the runner-up in 2007 and 2008.

The women’s basketball championship gives the Central Arizona College athletic program its 35th national title in less than 40 years of competition.
