CAC LPGA Volunteers
GOLD CANYON, Ariz. – When Lorena Ochoa captured the 2007 Safeway International LPGA event in March of 2007, she was one of 35 professional women’s players to finish under par on the Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club course.
Professional caddies played a significant role in many of those low scores as they helped the women traverse Gold Canyon’s premier course.
When the LPGA returns this year, Central Arizona College students will have an opportunity to get “inside the ropes” as they volunteer and recruit volunteers to caddy for amateur golfers playing in the 2008 Yoplait Pro-Am.
The two-day event will take place on Tuesday, March 25, and Wednesday, March 26, in Gold Canyon and kicks off the LPGA’s weeklong stay in Pinal County. Regulation play for the LPGA 2008 Safeway International will take place March 27-30.
Sharon Stinard, Central’s student leadership advisor on the Superstition Mountain Campus, is helping orchestrate the volunteer caddy recruiting effort. Central’s goal is to recruit 125 volunteer caddies.
“The students are excited and honored to be invited to participate in a national sports event,” Stinard said. “They are hoping they will be able to reach their goal.”
Any member of the community may serve as a caddy for the pro-am. While no experience is necessary, volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and physically able to walk 18 holes while carrying a full golf bag (pull carts are not used).
There are two shifts available each day beginning at 6 a.m. or 11 a.m. Volunteers may choose one or multiple shifts.
Volunteer caddies will wear a complimentary golf shirt provided by Antigua and will wear their own pants or shorts (no denim) and comfortable footwear.
Each volunteer caddy will receive two free tickets to the Safeway International main event, as well as have an opportunity to meet the LPGA players. Snacks and beverages also will be available.
To sign up for a caddy position through Central Arizona College, members of the community, students or employees of the college should contact Stinard by phone at 480-677-7733, or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
