Book club at Signal Peak

COOLIDGE (SIGNAL PEAK CAMPUS), Ariz. – The Central Arizona College library and Honors Program is combining efforts to offer a book club at the institution’s Signal Peak Campus.

No registration is required. Participants may just show up for the event.

The book club discussion open to the entire Pinal County community will be held Tuesday, April 15, from 12:30-2 p.m. and Wednesday, April 16 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Patio Room located on the second floor of the Mel A. Everingham Student Center (Building I).

The group will review These is My Words by Tucson author Nancy Turner, the book chosen by the residents of Arizona as the ONEBOOKAZ selection for 2008.

What is ONEBOOKAZ?

According to the organization’s website, ONEBOOKAZ started in Arizona in 2002 and is coordinated by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records (ASLAPR). The program is designed to bring communities together through literature.

Each April, this program encourages communities across Arizona to simultaneously read the same book and participate in discussions and programs centered on that specific work. One title is chosen for adults to read and another for children.

The goals of ONEBOOKAZ are:

To celebrate literature in the State of Arizona by encouraging the reading and exploration of a book.

  • To foster a sense of community through the shared experience of reading the same book, discussing themes and involving participants in the statewide events connected with the book.
  • To bring people together through public programs such as book discussions, author readings and signing events, panel discussions, traveling presentations, and special events.
  • To nurture partnerships between libraries, schools, museums, other allied institutions, the media, commercial vendors, the authors and the public.

Starting in 2007, the books selected each year center on Arizona topics and themes in preparation of the state’s Centennial in 2012.

“ONEBOOKAZ is a wonderful statewide program that allows Arizonans to read and discuss books about our state’s unique history and culture,” Deegan said.
